for Steve & Kate – a little late

First performed by TONUS PEREGRINUS in Magdalen College Chapel, Oxford on Valentine’s Day in 1998. Inspired by Hildegard of Bingen, this piece is a setting of words of the Lover and the Beloved from the Song of [King] Solomon, and explores the desire which finds its earthly consummation in marriage and heavenly fulfilment in the return of the Bridegroom for His Bride, the Church. To begin with, the female and male soloists alternate statements of their tune, then they overlap until they synchronize an octave apart, and finally they share the tune a fifth higher / fourth lower than before – which requires the tenor to reach a top D.
